Hi, sweet mamas! I hope nobody is hating me for taking so much time off lately! I’m guessing every blogger has been in the same boat – where you just need time away. No matter how much you want to, blogging is just not possible if your head isn’t in it, and that’s where I am. I’ll be back soon, I’m sure!
In my offline life, however, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying motherhood, my precious littles, a bit of traveling, and a new hobby that I’ve already mentioned: baking and decorating treats!
I’ve always loved decorating cookies for the holidays, as you may have seen here, but I somehow recently discovered the world of YouTube cookie decorating videos and finally decided to try out the new skills I had been watching! Here they are, friends… my snow{lady} sugar cookies!
Fun, right? They were a bit of work but not as bad as you might think.
In a nutshell, here’s how I made them:
Please, no laughing at my detailed plan. I was nervous, what can I say?
FYI, I only drew my outline on the first cookie, just to get a feel for it. After that, I frosted them freehand.
At this point I was a little nervous. I mean, they look pretty crappy, right? And my frosting, although steadily improving, was a bit painful.
A few hours later I filled in the hats.
Earlier in the day I had punched out some fondant buttons {my very first experience with fondant ever}. I felt that they were a bit dull, so a quick Google search told me to use a tiny bit of vegetable oil to shine them up.
Next, I picked out some white flour sprinkles and dotted them with edible marker.
Then I called it a night in order to let the icing and buttons dry.
The next day I went for it with the scarves, calling this the moment of truth {the filled in bodies didn’t give me the promise of very nice looking cookies}.
I learned at that moment that sugar sprinkles over wet icing make everything look fabulous, and this lesson I will carry with me from now on.
So now that I was dancing with joy and hope, you can imagine the pressure I felt with the hats! I couldn’t let these tiny details on the hats mess up all of my hard work!
They turned out too cute!
Finally, I drew on some faces with black edible marker and “glued” on my fondant buttons with leftover icing.
Oopsie… I did forget to glue the buttons on facing the right directions… but oh well.
I wrapped them up in treat bags and passed them off to my friends {who will probably hate me sooner or later for feeding them too many treats}!
They were so much fun!
You might look at them and wonder if they took me a week. They didn’t. But if they had, I probably wouldn’t have minded because they were so very fun to make. They took me most of two nap times {I was cleaned up and checking my email by the time the first little woke up} and two half-hours after bedtimes. This is probably long, too, since I was very nervous, very detailed, and very new at this. I started them on Monday afternoon and brought them, wrapped and ready to go, to MOPS on Wednesday morning.
I definitely have some St. Patrick’s Day and Easter cookie cutters picked out, so I’m looking forward to more cookie fun… but for now, I’m off to Florida with my hubby! Celebrating 8 years!
Do any of you enjoy trying to turn sugar cookies into masterpieces? Give me a link to your favorite project! I’d love to check it out!

oh my word – these are incredible! im impressed with your talent and patience – they look far too good to eat
What a wonderful compliment! Thank you so much, friend! I’m not sure I would normally do cookies that are quite so detailed, but I had lots of things I wanted to practice, so I worked them into these cookies.
So glad you stopped by, Elisabeth!
Those are awesome!
Thank you so much, sweet friend!
These are beautiful, I have a tremor (all my life) so I would never be able to do these. You did a great job, do they taste as good as they look?
Hi Laura! I’m actually pretty shaky (which I know is different, but still not good for cookie decorating!), but I learned a couple of things on the YouTube videos to help, including letting the icing “fall” from the tip, as opposed to sort of drawing with it. It also helped me a lot to rest my elbows on the counter. One of the decorators I became hooked on (sweetopia.net) says she’s really shaky, but her cookies are stunning! I also figured out that a toothpick can help a lot of not-so-pretty lines.
So happy you stopped by, sweet friend!
Oh, and yes they were delicious! I’ll share the sugar cookie recipe I use this week!
I know I said that your cupcakes looked like they came from a bakery, but these actually look better than anything I have seen in a bakery! I’m so impressed! You should make an addition to Jill’s cake business and make cookie favors
Geez Molly, you always know exactly the right things to say to make me smile for an hour. haha. Love you! I’m so glad you liked them!
Great job , Cassie! dang those are all professional looking. I’m just amazed you got them done during nap time.
Thanks so much, sweet lady! Well… I should note that my kids nap 2-3 hours…
I always love when you stop by!
These are too lovely to eat! Yummy!
Thank you so much, Tricia! I did eat one… and they were definitely worth destroying the pretty cookie!
So glad you came by!
Hey, those look really great! Just a quick question, Did you use that Betty Crocker cookie icing for the white part? How did you get it so smooth looking? And those buttons look great, how did you do that?!
Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for your kind words! I actually didn’t use the Betty Crocker this time… I made royal icing from scratch. I’ll post the recipe I used this week. I think the smoothness depended mostly on a) the consistency of the icing (not too thick), b) popping air bubbles immediately with a toothpick, and c) shaking the cookie back and forth a bit and tapping it gently on the counter to sort of set the icing and help it fall into place. The buttons actually weren’t that great… you can probably tell that they’re all different thicknesses. :-0 I have a flower fondant press thingy and, weirdly enough, I saw that it happened to have a random button on it. So I thought I’d try since I wanted to play with fondant a bit anyway! Here’s a link to the press I have (although I purchased it at JoAnn): http://www.bakedeco.com/detail.asp?id=10485&trng=fgle&gclid=CLaYteTL67UCFe9aMgodrQYACA#.UTkMZan3AUs. Hope this helps!
These are absolutely AMAZING! The tutorial is awesome, but even with all those instructions, I’m not sure I could make something so beautiful! I am in awe of you!!!
Oh thank you so much, sweet friend! I’m so glad you like them! They were quite the experiment for me, and I’m not sure I would normally do something so detailed. I just had lots of things that I wanted to test out.
So glad you came by!
So fun!!
Have a Beautifully Blessed day!
